Fatstock & fortnightly Store Market

THE CATTLE MARKET
DUNSWELL
FATSTOCK AND FORTNIGHTLY STORE MARKET

Forward – 209 head of stock including 16 Cattle, 141 Sheep and 52 Pigs.

PIGS
Sows looking stronger again, regularly on the right side of 60p/kg which is something we’ve not seen for a while. Small show of pigs this week, with Bacon Pigs selling to 180p/kg from both Webb & Goddard, Cherry Burton, purchased by Parkin Family Butchers, Howden and also from C F Buckton & Son, Rise to Propa Meats, Roos. Heavy gilts slightly stronger again with some really big sorts about, demand for those is expected to dip next week with one of the main abattoirs used by the butchers closed for renovations, but then should be back to normal in a fortnight.

Bacon Gilts to 180p/kg and £196.20, average 180.0p/kg.
Heavy Gilts to 112p/kg and £175.50, average 90.5p/kg.

Cull Sows to 62.5p/kg and £187.27, average 58.8p/kg.
Cull Boar to 53p/kg and £148.40.

SHEEP
Sheep looking much better all round compared to a fortnight ago, with more bounce in the job as buyers make the move from hoggs to spring lambs, which now look needed to fill the gap left by dwindling hogg numbers. A good number of spring lambs forward this week, with quality right across the board, market topped for the second time in recent weeks by D W Kirby & Son, Rise for a lovely pen of 5 Texel X, purchased by Parkin Family Butchers at 359p/kg or £147 being last pen of the day, trade held steady throughout today. Hogg numbers are starting to reduce significantly now, with some vendors taking the opportunity to have a clear out, with a few sold as fat today that probably would have been stores a month ago, but that market has really started to dry up now and any left on farm are definitely best gone sooner rather than later.

CATTLE
A smaller show this week with most of the spring cattle now sold and many out to grazing for the summer meaning this isn’t necessarily unexpected. Those forward today were mainly short keep and there was plenty of demand for them, with the overall store cattle average sitting at £1,632 and only one clean beast all day under £1,600. In the calf ring, just a handful forward and all stirks rather than calves but a phenomenal trade, with Hereford Heifers from A Oxtoby & Son, Bishop Burton topping over £1,000 and bucket reared Angus bulls over £800 as well.
