SHEEP
As big a show of sheep as we’ve seen for a while with more than 250 forward of one sort or another including the first Spring Lambs of the year, shown by Mrs S Fussey of Barton, and seeing good demand, topping at 380p/kg for a pair of Charolais X, weighing 49kg and grossing £186, purchased by Propa Meats, Roos, they’ll be available in the shop later this week. Hoggs still looking a tremendous trade for the time of year, with no significant drop off seen to this point, although flesh remains key, any with teeth up not particularly being punished either, as we’ve seen in previous years. Mrs Fussey had a good day in the cull market as well, topping the trade at £235 (203p/kg) for a couple of donkey-esque Suffolk X ewes.

Store Hoggs to £134, average £116.86.

CATTLE
Another good show of cattle this week, probably looking slightly more buyable than a fortnight ago, but still a very strong trade with a ring full of buyers once again. Market topped this week by a new vendor, G W Sutton of Fulstow with a pen of three strong, well done, native bred steers realising £2,080/head, significantly surpassing his haulier’s valuation so hopefully leaving the vendor very happy! The calf ring stole the show this week though, with fresher calves looking a strong trade once again but well and truly usurped by a couple of 7mo Blue Heifer Stirks, shown by A Oxtoby & Son, Bishop Burton, a credit to the vendor they realised £1,040 and £1,000, the first time we’ve ever broken the £1,000 barrier in that ring, a reflection of both current trade and the job that most of our calf vendors do in presenting quality stock for sale, both with these and the general trade we’ve seen recently.
